Program Description

Overall Program Goals:

The Train to Compete Teams will spend a significant amount of time on snow and will travel internationally to access high quality training venues and events when snow is not available in NorthAmerica. The program emphasis is on developing individual strengths and minimizing weaknesses by measuring key performance indicators (Physical, Psychological, Technical Tactical) that contribute to success at specific events.

The support of Sport Science Experts (S&C, Mental, Nutrition, Physio) will be incorporated into the program to enhance the technical and tactical training regime. Qualifying for, and attending more significant competitions will markedly increase the intensity of the training from the previous stage. At this level an athlete’s success will be determined based on frequency and consistency of podium performances (event wins).

Events attended may include:

  • North America, Europa and South America Cup Events
  • Jr Worlds (Selection Required)
  • Youth Olympics (Selection Required)
  • World Cup (Selection Required)
  • Canada Winter Games (Selection Required)

Typically, athletes will spend 2-3 years in this stage and increase the number of on snow training days from 70 to 100+ each year. Athletes graduating from the Train to Compete Teams can expect to move into Canada Snowboard’s High Performance Programs (National Development Team or National Team).

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Develop versatility and strategy for competitions in preparation for beginning a World Cup career.
  • Develop athlete specific, 12-month training programs incorporating sport science experts to address all key performance factors.
